Food Photography & Styling Workshop

I am so excited to be attending this food photography and styling workshop next month! Over the last few years I have been totally captured by beautiful food photography on the internet and in Jamie, my favourite food magazine.

Every day I see mouth-watering recipes on the internet, like this Spicy Shrimp and Avocado Salad with Miso Dressing, or this One Pot Creamy Broccoli Pasta or these Peaches and Ricotta Pancakes.

I love food. I get so much enjoyment out of looking at beautiful recipes online and plotting my next kitchen adventure. They say you eat with your eyes first... Emma of A Beautiful Mess has inspired me so many times with her gorgeous photos (above).

This is probably my best food photo so far, from this post. Using natural light from my dining room window, creating a bit of interest in the background and placing an accompanying beverage with the cookies. What do you think of it? Does it make you want to bake cookies?!

My regular readers will know I'm also continually inspired by The Londoner's tasty recipes, which are also always beautifully styled (above).

Meeta Khurana Wolff of What's for lunch, Honey? and Jeanne Horak-Druiffe of Cook Sister are running the workshop together. Meeta is a a freelance food photographer, stylist and writer living in Germany (photos above). She holds these workshops every couple of months, always in a fabulous city. She has been so warm and welcoming over email already, I can't wait to meet her. Jeanne is from South Africa and lives and works in London. When she's not at her day job, she's a food, wine and travel blogger. Doesn't this Blood Orange Posset from Jeanne's blog look delicious?

I'm proud to be attending the workshop as part of my full-time job at a global food organisation. A few weeks after the workshop, I'll be returning to London to exercise my new skills by taking photos of a BBQ food tour. Yum!

I'm hoping that after attending the workshop, I too will know all the insider tricks to taking beautiful photos like the ones above! And of course I will share the adventure here as soon as I get home.

  2. Sounds exciting, I'm not a good cook or chef so tend to stay clear of the kitchen.... I bury my head in the sand when it come to baking. I would much perfer to clean, dust, hoover, mow the lawn, etc.... Some time I will tackle the kitchen though. Like your cookies and milk. Sounds interesting though and perhaps you might even inspire me to bake something nice...

    All things nice...

Let me whet your appetite...

In my last post I wrote about a food photography and styling workshop I was looking forward to attending in London. Well, the date arrived and I made my way across the water for a couple of days last week. And, it was amazing! This is the very first photo I took at the workshop. And it's a nice photo of a beautiful carrot cake that was part of our lunch spread on the first day. But it's a photo I took in my comfort zone, and by that I mean a photo taken using the 'automatic' settings on my Canon SLR camera. 'Automatic' on a SLR camera is a setting that will always shoot the 'best' photo according to the scene you are shooting. It is leaving all of the control of the photo in the capable hands of the camera's technology. And, this setting is wonderful and it was the safety blanket I needed before I could justify buying my SLR camera last year. But. One of the first things that Meeta and Jeanne , the workshop hosts, told our gr...

Our favourite baby things

Our little baby is 8 weeks old now :-) I can't believe how quick the weeks are flying by. Today I want to tell you all about the best baby items we've been using over the last eight weeks. If you or a friend are expecting a baby, I hope this might form a practical shopping list for you! Nursing/feeding Glider/nursing chair I love my glider. It sits patiently in the corner of the nursery, waiting for the baby and I to sit comfortably at any given moment! The rocking motion is wonderful for getting your baby off to sleep too. I got this glider on sale in Smyths for €100. Radio, clock and nursery lamp Beside the glider we have a bedside table with a radio, clock and nursery lamp. The radio and clock I already had in the house but the lamp was specially bought for the nursery. It cost all of about €3 in IKEA and it really is perfect for the nursery - all encased and not too bright. The radio is great company during feeds and the clock is all-important for timing t...

A new chapter

As many of you already know, it has been a tough couple of months in our house. In December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had noticed a lump in one of my breasts and when it hadn't gone away after a couple of weeks, I went to get it checked out. I was convinced it was a blocked milk duct as I was still breastfeeding our baby - but unfortunately it was not and after some very stressful days waiting for test results, we were delivered the devastating news that it was cancer. It was an enormous shock for my husband and I, our family and our friends. The days and weeks following my initial diagnosis were the worst of my life and it was, without a doubt, only the love and strength of our family and friends and our beautiful baby boy that pulled me out of that darkness. Here we are now in the middle of March and we are soldiering through my treatment plan one day at a time. I am now more than halfway through 20 weeks of chemotherapy. And I’m doing well! Please forgi...
