Essential tips from the Irish Blogger Association Conference 2015

Where oh where have I been?! Well, no matter, I'm here now, and I'd like to tell you all about the Irish Blogger Association Conference that I went to last weekend. It was a really good day out.

Marion from All The Wee Things and I made the trip down to Cork last Saturday morning with much excitement. In fact, we were talking so much that, as only two girls can, we missed the off-ramp for Cork and continued on merrily half-way to Limerick before we realised!

However, as organised as we were, we still made it to the conference in time for the 12 o'clock start at the Clarion Hotel on Lapp's Quay. And boy, did the conference kick off with a great start. Jamie Tuohy was the MC for the afternoon and he managed to introduce every presenter with such uncontrollable joy and humour that it was hard not to be infected.

Here's a quick list of who spoke and what they spoke about on the day:

Edel from The Beauty Dial
Edel spoke about how to proactively create publicity for your blog and the importance of a good media kit

Ali from Goss.ie
Ali asked us all to think about what our passion is and what our talent is... And to use them as the key to our success. She also shared the invaluable insight that Facebook does not like you to share YouTube videos and will not share them with your audience as much as if it was an embedded video *now we know!*

Anita from Dolledup.ie
Anita told us all about dolledup.ie and how she enlists the help of industry experts to create valuable content for her readers - this site is like Trip Advisor but for all things Beauty and has some great Sunday reading...

Corinna from Cherry Sue Doin' The Do
Corinna stole the hearts and minds of every audience member with her presentation on Prada Travel on a Primark Purse. I loved her philosophy that travel adventures don't end when you have kids (she has five!) and her tips and tricks on how to travel on a shoestring. Corinna writes about travel every Tuesday on Cherry Sue's blog - if you click one thing today, make sure it's her

Ciamh from Insight Consultants
Ciamh delivered a really insightful presentation about the importance of setting goals for your blog to ensure momentum and growth and also how to grow your online presence. Check out her Top 100 Twitter Tips on YouTube

Sue from Cherry Sue Doin' The Do
Sue spoke about the importance of kindness amongst bloggers and supporting each others'  endeavours, as 'a rising tide lifts all boats'. This was a common theme on the day and the positivity and sense of sharing was warm and energising

Allan Dixon
Unfortunately I missed most of Allan's presentation on taking great photos for Instagram. However if this is something you are interested in, he has a really great article on his website all about How To Kick Ass on Instagram

Rebecca from Becboop.com
Rebecca gave a lively presentation on Periscope - Twitter's new live-streaming app. Think YouTube, but 100% live! Started in April of this year, Periscope already has over 10 million users... This is the next Big Thing, if you're looking for it...

James Kavanagh
Listed by the DailyEdge.ie as one of the top 7 Irish people you should be following on Snapchat, James's presentation nearly took the roof off the conference room in the Clarion Hotel - think rude photos and much hilarity... You can follow him here

Darragh Doyle
Darragh was the final and 'keynote' speaker of the day. His presentation was all about creating engaging online content but the thing I loved the most was his shout-out about Nellas Music and her upcoming song Beautiful for Aware's 30th Anniversary. She's looking for people to send in short videos of beautiful moments for her music video - you can find out more here

There was also a panel discussion on the day that was both entertaining and motivational. Central to the whole day was the theme that if you love what you do and you work as hard as you can, you can make your dreams a reality. Great advice for all of us!

All in all, it was an inspirational day that left both of us feeling energised and motivated. I'd like to say a big Thank You to the #IBCC event organisers and also to Marion for driving us all the way there!

You can also check out Marion's amazing post all about the conference here.

Let me whet your appetite...

In my last post I wrote about a food photography and styling workshop I was looking forward to attending in London. Well, the date arrived and I made my way across the water for a couple of days last week. And, it was amazing! This is the very first photo I took at the workshop. And it's a nice photo of a beautiful carrot cake that was part of our lunch spread on the first day. But it's a photo I took in my comfort zone, and by that I mean a photo taken using the 'automatic' settings on my Canon SLR camera. 'Automatic' on a SLR camera is a setting that will always shoot the 'best' photo according to the scene you are shooting. It is leaving all of the control of the photo in the capable hands of the camera's technology. And, this setting is wonderful and it was the safety blanket I needed before I could justify buying my SLR camera last year. But. One of the first things that Meeta and Jeanne , the workshop hosts, told our gr...

Our favourite baby things

Our little baby is 8 weeks old now :-) I can't believe how quick the weeks are flying by. Today I want to tell you all about the best baby items we've been using over the last eight weeks. If you or a friend are expecting a baby, I hope this might form a practical shopping list for you! Nursing/feeding Glider/nursing chair I love my glider. It sits patiently in the corner of the nursery, waiting for the baby and I to sit comfortably at any given moment! The rocking motion is wonderful for getting your baby off to sleep too. I got this glider on sale in Smyths for €100. Radio, clock and nursery lamp Beside the glider we have a bedside table with a radio, clock and nursery lamp. The radio and clock I already had in the house but the lamp was specially bought for the nursery. It cost all of about €3 in IKEA and it really is perfect for the nursery - all encased and not too bright. The radio is great company during feeds and the clock is all-important for timing t...

A new chapter

As many of you already know, it has been a tough couple of months in our house. In December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had noticed a lump in one of my breasts and when it hadn't gone away after a couple of weeks, I went to get it checked out. I was convinced it was a blocked milk duct as I was still breastfeeding our baby - but unfortunately it was not and after some very stressful days waiting for test results, we were delivered the devastating news that it was cancer. It was an enormous shock for my husband and I, our family and our friends. The days and weeks following my initial diagnosis were the worst of my life and it was, without a doubt, only the love and strength of our family and friends and our beautiful baby boy that pulled me out of that darkness. Here we are now in the middle of March and we are soldiering through my treatment plan one day at a time. I am now more than halfway through 20 weeks of chemotherapy. And I’m doing well! Please forgi...
