Pregnancy: 5 things that will help you survive the first 12 weeks!

Well ladies, I found the first twelve weeks of this here pregnancy pretty tough. It wasn't the morning sickness - I was able to learn to manage that part - it was the utterly OVERWHELMING exhaustion! It was waking up in the morning and feeling like I had already done my day, when it was still ahead of me... It was feeling like I had stayed up all night and had reached that achy, tired and emotional stage. But ALL. THE. TIME! Thankfully, it has worn off now and I'm feeling quite back to myself once again. During the first twelve weeks though, there were a few little gems that helped me through - and here they are:

A large, BPA-free sports water bottle
Suddenly I was always thirsty. And that included waking up four or maybe five times in the early hours - for water. I started filling my cycling water bottle and keeping that beside the bed - it turned out to be just the thing, allowing me to drink water lying down with no spills! This is the one I have.

Jacob's Marietta Biscuits
Perhaps this is my number one tip! I bought a packet of Marietta Biscuits in SuperValu and left them on my bedside table for 'early-morning' morning sickness. If I woke up feeling green immediately, one of these helped me to feel better right away, and allowed me to get down to the kitchen to make breakfast (instead of spend ten minutes with the toilet bowl!). I think plain crackers or ginger nut biscuits would work too.

Fox's Glacier Fruits
These hard-boiled sweets have a lot of flavour and you can suck on them for ages. I found that they got rid of any lingering nausea in between meals or while in the car. I found them at Londis, Centra and SuperValu. Marks & Spencer Percy Pigs did the same, plus they're just so tasty!

Bio-Oil
I started using Bio-Oil every night from about 8 weeks. Apparently it's a good one to keep stretch marks at bay. It also smells lovely. Although I wasn't really showing yet, it was something nice and relaxing to do after a hot shower and it made me feel like I had some sort of control over the changes that were about to happen!

A hot water bottle and an ice pack
Again, these are just some comfort items that really helped me along. Some evenings a lukewarm hot water bottle on my lower back while on the couch was just the ticket to making me feel like I could do this. The ice pack was great relief in the place of painkillers for a headache or migraine.

There have been a few other things that I have learnt along the way, I'll put them together for another update post soon! I hope this helps any of you ladies out there suffering through the 'silent' twelve weeks when all is still a secret... ;-)

Let me whet your appetite...

In my last post I wrote about a food photography and styling workshop I was looking forward to attending in London. Well, the date arrived and I made my way across the water for a couple of days last week. And, it was amazing! This is the very first photo I took at the workshop. And it's a nice photo of a beautiful carrot cake that was part of our lunch spread on the first day. But it's a photo I took in my comfort zone, and by that I mean a photo taken using the 'automatic' settings on my Canon SLR camera. 'Automatic' on a SLR camera is a setting that will always shoot the 'best' photo according to the scene you are shooting. It is leaving all of the control of the photo in the capable hands of the camera's technology. And, this setting is wonderful and it was the safety blanket I needed before I could justify buying my SLR camera last year. But. One of the first things that Meeta and Jeanne , the workshop hosts, told our gr...

Our favourite baby things

Our little baby is 8 weeks old now :-) I can't believe how quick the weeks are flying by. Today I want to tell you all about the best baby items we've been using over the last eight weeks. If you or a friend are expecting a baby, I hope this might form a practical shopping list for you! Nursing/feeding Glider/nursing chair I love my glider. It sits patiently in the corner of the nursery, waiting for the baby and I to sit comfortably at any given moment! The rocking motion is wonderful for getting your baby off to sleep too. I got this glider on sale in Smyths for €100. Radio, clock and nursery lamp Beside the glider we have a bedside table with a radio, clock and nursery lamp. The radio and clock I already had in the house but the lamp was specially bought for the nursery. It cost all of about €3 in IKEA and it really is perfect for the nursery - all encased and not too bright. The radio is great company during feeds and the clock is all-important for timing t...

A new chapter

As many of you already know, it has been a tough couple of months in our house. In December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had noticed a lump in one of my breasts and when it hadn't gone away after a couple of weeks, I went to get it checked out. I was convinced it was a blocked milk duct as I was still breastfeeding our baby - but unfortunately it was not and after some very stressful days waiting for test results, we were delivered the devastating news that it was cancer. It was an enormous shock for my husband and I, our family and our friends. The days and weeks following my initial diagnosis were the worst of my life and it was, without a doubt, only the love and strength of our family and friends and our beautiful baby boy that pulled me out of that darkness. Here we are now in the middle of March and we are soldiering through my treatment plan one day at a time. I am now more than halfway through 20 weeks of chemotherapy. And I’m doing well! Please forgi...
