Newborn baby gift ideas

If you have a friend or family member that will be having a baby soon, here are a few thoughtful and inexpensive newborn baby gift ideas...

1. Ewan the Dream Sheep
I've written about this cute little sheep before, but I couldn't write this post without including him again. This sleep aid is just wonderful for newborn babies - comforting and soothing sounds that help them get off to sleep quickly and happily.

2. Bright, contrasty cloth books
Newborn babies don't have the best eyesight! That's all still developing in the early weeks. But, they can see bright and contrasting colours. A soft cloth book like this one is a lovely activity for mum and baby from the early weeks right through the first six months. This one is just too cute with all the little tails.

3. Bright Starts Flexi Ball
This little colourful ball is a big favourite with my little man. It's easy to grip, interesting to look at, and when he gets a little older, great to shake. Plus mum will enjoy watching her baby learn all the fun that can be had with this as the months go by.

4. MooGoo Natural Mini Moo Bubbly Wash
A wonderful natural baby wash that is incredibly gentle on a new baby's delicate skin. No harmful chemicals will make mum happy and it makes plenty of bubbles for baby.

5. Nuby Ice Bite Teether Keys
Around the four month mark, every baby puts EVERY THING into their mouths to test it out! These bright keys are great for chewing and tasting and will help with the early days of teething. A present that mum is guaranteed to use and appreciate.

6. Clevamama Splash and Wrap Bath Towel
An ingenious baby product - a towel that fastens around mum's neck to allow for safe and easy lifting of baby out of the bath without getting mum wet. She will thank you for this one!

If you need to buy a newborn baby gift soon, I hope one or more of these ideas might inspire you.

Let me whet your appetite...

In my last post I wrote about a food photography and styling workshop I was looking forward to attending in London. Well, the date arrived and I made my way across the water for a couple of days last week. And, it was amazing! This is the very first photo I took at the workshop. And it's a nice photo of a beautiful carrot cake that was part of our lunch spread on the first day. But it's a photo I took in my comfort zone, and by that I mean a photo taken using the 'automatic' settings on my Canon SLR camera. 'Automatic' on a SLR camera is a setting that will always shoot the 'best' photo according to the scene you are shooting. It is leaving all of the control of the photo in the capable hands of the camera's technology. And, this setting is wonderful and it was the safety blanket I needed before I could justify buying my SLR camera last year. But. One of the first things that Meeta and Jeanne , the workshop hosts, told our gr...

Our favourite baby things

Our little baby is 8 weeks old now :-) I can't believe how quick the weeks are flying by. Today I want to tell you all about the best baby items we've been using over the last eight weeks. If you or a friend are expecting a baby, I hope this might form a practical shopping list for you! Nursing/feeding Glider/nursing chair I love my glider. It sits patiently in the corner of the nursery, waiting for the baby and I to sit comfortably at any given moment! The rocking motion is wonderful for getting your baby off to sleep too. I got this glider on sale in Smyths for €100. Radio, clock and nursery lamp Beside the glider we have a bedside table with a radio, clock and nursery lamp. The radio and clock I already had in the house but the lamp was specially bought for the nursery. It cost all of about €3 in IKEA and it really is perfect for the nursery - all encased and not too bright. The radio is great company during feeds and the clock is all-important for timing t...

A new chapter

As many of you already know, it has been a tough couple of months in our house. In December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had noticed a lump in one of my breasts and when it hadn't gone away after a couple of weeks, I went to get it checked out. I was convinced it was a blocked milk duct as I was still breastfeeding our baby - but unfortunately it was not and after some very stressful days waiting for test results, we were delivered the devastating news that it was cancer. It was an enormous shock for my husband and I, our family and our friends. The days and weeks following my initial diagnosis were the worst of my life and it was, without a doubt, only the love and strength of our family and friends and our beautiful baby boy that pulled me out of that darkness. Here we are now in the middle of March and we are soldiering through my treatment plan one day at a time. I am now more than halfway through 20 weeks of chemotherapy. And I’m doing well! Please forgi...
